If you’ll recall, the augmented reality-based game Pokémon GO was kind of a big deal after it launched, and for quite awhile after that. Niantic, the developer behind the title, had a hit on its hands.
And so it is looking to capitalize on that momentum with another AR-based title, and this one will be based on another wildly popular franchise: Harry Potter. According to a report from TechCrunch, Niantic is currently hard at work on an AR game called Harry Potter: Wizards United, which will launch into the market sometime in 2018.
The game is reportedly being co-developed by Warner Bros. Interactive and its new sub-brand Portkey Games.
This isn’t the first time this particular piece of news has surfaced, interestingly enough. A similar story found its way online last year, but was debunked, and the original article with the information (including that Niantic had purchased the rights to the app) was pulled offline. As it stands right now, while this report says that the app “is now official,” there doesn’t actually seem to be anything officially announcing the title just yet.
“The app is now official, bu the details are still scarce, with the launch timeframe of just sometime next year, but it sounds like there will be significant influence from the Niantic game Ingress, which allows players to roam the real world collecting power-ups, defending locations and exploring their environment.”
So, if this report is accurate, it means that Niantic will probably have another smash-hit augmented reality game for the mass market to consume sometime next year.
Would you buy an AR game based on Harry Potter?
